Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin
Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin (26 May O.S./6 June 1799, Moscow – 29 January O.S./10 February 1837, Saint Petersburg) was a Russian poet, novelist, playwright and literary critic, widely regarded as a founder of modern Russian literature. He was born to Sergey Lvovich Pushkin and Nadezhda Osipovna Pushkina, née Gannibal. From 1811 to 1817 he studied at the Imperial Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum, where his literary career began. His major works include Ruslan and Ludmila, the verse novel Eugene Onegin, Boris Godunov, The Tales of Belkin, The Queen of Spades, The Captain's Daughter, The Bronze Horseman and the poem Exegi Monumentum. He was sent away from Saint Petersburg to southern Russia in 1820 and lived in exile at Mikhailovskoye from 1824 to 1826. In 1831 he married Natalia Nikolaevna Goncharova. He founded the periodical Sovremennik in 1836. Mortally wounded in a duel with Georges d'Anthès on 27 January O.S./8 February 1837, he died two days later in his apartment at 12 Moika Embankment, Saint Petersburg.
