Anna Petrovna

ANNA PETROVNA was a daughter of Peter I and Catherine Alexeyevna, the future Empress Catherine I. She was born in Moscow on 27 January (7 February) 1708. After her parents' formal marriage she bore the title of Tsarevna, and from 1721 that of Tsesarevna. She received a private court education; sources record her knowledge of French, German, Italian and Swedish. On 21 May (1 June) 1725 she married Charles Frederick, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp. In 1727 she moved with her husband to Kiel. Their son Carl Peter Ulrich, the future Russian Emperor Peter III, was born there on 10 (21) February 1728. Anna Petrovna died in Kiel on 4 (15) May 1728 and was buried in the Peter and Paul Cathedral in Saint Petersburg in November 1728.
