Susan Taylor
SUSAN TAYLOR is a Canadian sculptor, engraver and medallist who spent much of her career at the Royal Canadian Mint. Originally from Brantford, she earned an Honours Bachelor of Arts from McMaster University, studying art and art history with a specialization in sculpture, and later completed professional training and certification as a Mint Engraver at the Royal Canadian Mint. She joined the Mint as a Mint Engraver in 1981, working in bas-relief sculpture, coin modelling and master tooling. She left the Mint in 1996 for family obligations and returned in 1999 as a Senior Engraver, retiring in 2017. In 2003 she engraved the new uncrowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II for Canadian coinage from Susanna Blunt's design. Alongside her coin work, Taylor has been active in medallic art; she served as president of the Medallic Art Society of Canada and later as a vice-delegate of the Fédération Internationale de la Médaille d’Art. Her medal Remembrance received the 2016 American Medal of the Year award. In 2023 Taylor received the Coin of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award. After retirement she continued to create medals and coin designs, including the Lady Peace image introduced on the 2019 Canadian-American Peace and Liberty medals and used in subsequent Canadian Peace Dollars.
