Viktor Robertovich Tsoi
TSOI Viktor Robertovich was a Soviet rock musician, lyricist, singer-songwriter, artist and film actor, and a major figure in late twentieth-century Soviet rock culture. His work developed in Leningrad's independent music scene and later reached a much wider audience. Direct poetic language, distinctive imagery and a combination of personal expression with themes of broader social significance helped his songs become part of a generation's cultural experience. Tsoi's musical career was closely associated with the band Kino. The albums Gruppa krovi (Blood Type) and Zvezda po imeni Solntse (A Star Called the Sun) played an important part in the spread of Soviet rock music, while the song 'I Want Changes!' acquired a particular public resonance during perestroika. In cinema, Tsoi played the leading role in Rashid Nugmanov's film The Needle (Igla) and appeared in Sergei Solovyov's Assa. His death in a road accident interrupted work on Kino's next album, which the surviving band members completed and released posthumously. Tsoi's work remains a subject of research, artistic reinterpretation and cultural remembrance.
