Order of the Red Banner

The Order of the Red Banner was a Soviet state military award and one of the oldest Soviet orders. The all-Union Order of the Red Banner was established in 1924, building on the earlier tradition of the Order of the Red Banner of the Russian SFSR introduced in 1918. It was intended primarily to recognize exceptional bravery, self-sacrifice and courage in defence of the state, outstanding combat actions and skilful leadership in battle. Repeated awards of the same order were expressly permitted and recorded within the Soviet awards system.
