Leonid Alexandrovich Govorov
GOVOROV Leonid Alexandrovich was a Soviet military commander and one of the principal leaders of the defence of Leningrad during the Second World War. He served in the Russian Civil War and the Soviet–Finnish War. During the Second World War he directed the defence of the western approaches to Moscow and subsequently commanded the Leningrad Front. Forces under his command helped break and ultimately lift the siege of Leningrad and took part in offensives in northwestern Russia. He emphasized artillery preparation and coordination between branches of the armed forces. After the war he held senior commands in the Soviet armed forces. His ashes are interred in the Kremlin Wall.
