Philip Mountbatten
PRINCE PHILIP, DUKE OF EDINBURGH was the husband of Elizabeth II and British royal consort. He was born at Mon Repos on Corfu on 10 June 1921 as Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, the only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg. After the exile of the Greek royal family, he spent much of his childhood outside Greece. He attended Cheam School, then spent a year at Salem School in Germany, and studied at Gordonstoun School in Scotland from 1934 to 1939. In 1939 he joined the Royal Navy and trained at Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth. During the Second World War he served in the Indian Ocean, Mediterranean and Pacific; he was mentioned in despatches for his actions at the Battle of Cape Matapan. From 1950 to 1951 he commanded the frigate HMS Magpie. In 1947 he became a naturalised British subject, renounced his Greek and Danish royal titles and adopted the surname Mountbatten. He married Princess Elizabeth on 20 November 1947 and was created Duke of Edinburgh shortly before the wedding. Their children were Charles III, Anne, Princess Royal, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward. Following Elizabeth II's accession he supported her as consort while undertaking extensive state, military and public duties. He died at Windsor Castle on 9 April 2021.
